Crafty Shopaholics – Design Your Own Fabric
It’s been awhile since I’ve fallen in love with a custom product. I was starting to wonder if I was becoming jaded by the internet.
Then I discovered Spoonflower, a site that lets you put your own design on their fabric.
And, as with the wonder of most custom products these days on the internet, you don’t need to order industrial quantities to get your own custom designed fabric!
I just love the idea of Spoonflower, even though I can’t sew. Basically you create your own design, upload it to Spoonflower, chose size of fabric you need, and sit back and wait for your custom fabric to arrive in the mail. Your design can repeat (heart print etc.) or can go across the whole fabric if you so choose and the sizing, colour and style of your design is limited only by your imagination.
The fabric is 100% combed cotton, and the sizing starts with a $5US swatch, or you can order by the yard for $18 a yard (that’s just under 1 metre for us Aussies. As it’s a new service, you can currently only get the 1 fabric type, however plans are to introduce more fabrics as time goes on.
Think of the options – a cotton sundress with a print that no-one but you owns, you’re favourite motif on custom made cushions, cute little coin purses (you can tell as someone who doesn’t sew, I have modest aspirations about what I can produce). You can also check out the Spoonflower Flickr pool to see what other users are doing, and vote for your favourite fabric and then purchase the most popular fabric of the week at the Spoonflower Etsy store.
The great news is Spoonflower do ship to Australia, the old shipping rate for swatches was $US2, but is pending update (but damn, how cheap is that?) and they ship via UPS, which means it would take roughly 2-3 weeks to arrive in Australia.
Spoonflower is currently in beta (testing phase) which means you need to sign up for an invitation, however mine arrived quite promptly so you should have too long of a wait – and you can practise your designs while waiting anyway :) And of course any crafty shopaholics who have gotten some fabric made, we’d love to see the resulting product!
