To what extent is the interest in eco-conscious living in general growing?
An awareness of our impact on the environment and the need to commit to a more ecological lifestyle and business practices has been growing rapidly over the past ten years or so.

We first saw this trend becoming evident with food and it has since crossed over into the cosmetics and skincare industry as customers increasingly seek out natural and organic alternatives.

Natural and organic products have now entered the mainstream in the beauty industry throughout the world and are the fastest growing category in skincare.

Customers are seeking out natural alternatives for two main reasons – they no longer wish to put chemicals on their skin and they are keen to support companies such as Trilogy which have sustainable business practices. Trilogy are carbon neutral, are committed to sourcing ingredients from fairly traded sources and use recyclable and biodegradable packaging from sustainably managed sources.

My sister Sarah Gibbs and I founded Trilogy in 2002 to combine our commitment to natural skincare with our passion for the environment to create Trilogy – exquisite natural skincare products with maximum effect on your skin and minimum effect on our environment

To what extent is fair trade of increasing importance to Australian’s?

In our experience Australian customers are increasingly interested in where products come from and how they are produced, so they look to companies like Trilogy who are committed to sourcing ingredients from fairly traded sources. Two key ingredients in Trilogy products help create income opportunities and social benefits for farmers and communities in rural Africa.

Trilogy source the cornerstone ingredient for their skin care range, Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, in partnership with a fair trade cooperative in Lesthoto, central Africa. Our Rosehip Oil is certified organic, clinically proven, fully sustainable and a key ingredient across our product range.

Rosehips grow wild in Lesthoto and are harvested for three months of the year providing valuable income and economic security for local farming communities during this period. Trilogy’s continued partnership with the people of Lesthoto has been one of the most rewarding aspects of growing Trilogy’s business.

Trilogy also partners with PhytoTrade Africa to purchase large quantities of Marula Oil from the Eudafano Women’s Cooperative in North Central Namibia for the production of its Everything Balm.

PhytoTrade is Africa’s only trade association dedicated to the development of a fair trade and environmentally sustainable natural products industry. It was established to help indigenous communities prosper from trade initiatives.

The production of Marula oil provides both social and economic benefits to poor rural farmers, particularly rural women in Africa who are the traditional custodians of the Marula resource.

Any tips for greening our beauty practices and lifestyle (as well as using Trilogy!)

  • Look carefully at the list of ingredients on packaging – just because there is one natural ingredient included in a product doesn’t mean it is a natural product
  • Having the word ‘natural’ in a product name doesn’t cessarily mean it contains natural ingredients
  • If a product claims to be organic, check it has a quality seal from an internationally accredited organisation
  • Does the brand have integrity? Is it up-front with the consumer and committed to ethical, cultural and environmental sustainability? At Trilogy we believe that to be a genuinely natural and/or organic skincare brand, one has to have a holistic approach and be committed to being carbon neutral, sourcing fairly traded ingredients and to producing recyclable and biodegradable packaging from sustainably managed sources.
  • If what’s on offer sounds too good to be true (e.g.price), it probably is!
