Making the world a better place with Better World Books

I love to read. And I read really really quickly, so getting books for a good price is a high priority for me. When your reading 2-3 books per week, you can’t afford to just head to the local bookshop. So imagine my excitement when I recently came across a fantastic US based site that costs….wait for it…$US3.97 to ship books to Australia!

Making the world a better place with Better World Books
Betterworld.com started as a group of friends selling textbooks to earn some extra money. Since then it’s evolved into a new type of eco-conscious book seller. In addition to selling brand new books, they also source secondhand books from a variety of networks and then the profits from these donated books are put towards supporting literacy projects around the world.

Even their shipping leaves a carbon neutral footprint! Now, I can’t comment too much on the secondhand side of things, because the three books I searched for were all out of used stock. But it’s easy enough to see which books are secondhand, as the your search is returned in three tabs – one which shows the new books, the secondhand books and one tab which shows all books regardless of whether they are new or secondhand.

As for the new books, I found the pricing to be pretty much inline with Amazon.com (i.e. a lot cheaper than in Australia for non-bestsellers) which is where I tend to do my US book shopping. Where I think Betterworld.com is now a better choice for me comes straight down to the shipping costs: Betterworld charges a flat rate of $US3.97 per book to Australia
Amazon charges $4.99 per shipment plus $4.99US per item for new books and I believe the marketplace is similar pricing, although I have to be honest and say I’ve never used it.

I did a few more searches on some of the more random books I’ve had trouble tracking down any place other than Amazon, and managed to find them on Betterworld.com, so therefore I officially have a new favourite book site! Betterworld.com accepts Paypal and Credit Card payments.

You can also use the discount code BWEVENT0708 for 20% off before June 30 (full kudos to the Ozbargain community for sourcing that discount code)
