Budget Brand o' The Month – Rimmel

Budget Brand o' The Month RimmelRegular readers will recall that late last year I waxed lyrically about the wonders of Maybelline. Great price, great product, and actually does what it says on the packet. Joy! My new love however, is Rimmel. Some time ago when I first started posting on NSO I mentioned how much I like Rimmel’s double-ended eyeliner… but you’ll be pleased to know I can now happily inform you there’s much more to like about Rimmel than just their eyeliner.

I recently travelled back to Australia for the festive period, and in an attempt to cut back on the amount of ‘stuff’ I was carting around, I somewhat amusingly made the decision not to take my full makeup bag. In fact, it was a barely a representation. I didn’t pack any eyeshadow, no lipstick or gloss (just a balm) and only my trusty Rimmel brown/gold eyeliner. So… come New Years Eve, I was caught a little short on the appropriate makeup front. Being pretty budget concious, I thought it a little irresponsible of me to lash out on makeup at the pricier end of the spectrum that I didn’t actually need, so I paid an 11th hour visit to Priceline .

For under $30, I bagged a metallic eyeshadow duo (extremely pale grey and light grey), a dark grey eyeliner and a pinky-brown (far more pink than brown) lipliner. I covered my entire lids in a fine film of Clarins’ beauty flash balm to help make the eyeshadow stick (anyone who was in Melbourne for the 07/08 NYE will know why) then lightly coated my lid with the paler of the two eyeshadows. Next, I lined the inner rim and between the lashes of my lower eyelid with the liner and smudged it a little before adding a smeer of the darker shadow over the liner on my bottom lid and a fine wash around the lash line on my upper lid. Finally, I coated my entire bottom lip with the liner, pressed and slightly rubbed my lips together before adding some lip balm for shine. The only other real makeup of note was a MAC blush in ‘blushbaby’ – another neither pink nor brown shade – which I already had in my very lightweight makeup bag.

The verdict? The eyeshadow lasted phenomenally well given the heat (speaking of which, for any makeup labels who want to test the longevity of an eyeshadow, try doing it in Australia before claiming it’s crease-proof!), and lip colour added in this way lasts much longer than a regular gloss or lipstick.

So next time you’re hunting for a new makeup fix on a budget, give Rimmel a try – it’s well worth the investigation!
