Black Friday is A'Comin

A day you may want to mark in your diaries is November 23rd, which is ‘Black Friday’ in the US. Black Friday is the day after thanksgiving and a huge shopping day in the US.

I’ve never actually experienced it in person, but its supposed to be crazy – people lining up overnight and doing the mad dash for heavily discounted items (think old school Boxing Day/Stocktake Sales), and even the hype I’ve seen on some of the websites is pretty funny – one site in particular cracked me up with its shopping tactics of hiding your item of choice in a lesser visited area of the store a week before, and then recover it late on Black Friday afternoon to avoid the checkout lines.

Anyway, the reason I mention Black Friday is that some online retailers do participate, and generally I have noticed a US holiday does lead to an increase in coupon codes. Apparently the Monday after Black Friday is known as ‘Cyber Monday’ because it’s when all the online stores get involved, but it’s a bit hard to tell if this is just marketing hype.

Amazon will definitely be having a Black Friday sale at this link, however details of what will actually be on sale are light on the ground. I did a bit of research on Black Friday Online Sales, and generally the consensus seems to be that until either the Thursday or Black Friday itself, it will be hard to tell who is bringing their sales online. The site I recommend keeping an eye on is Gottadeal.com, as they have a huge section of their forum devoted to Black Friday, and they will be dedicating pages to each store and clearly marking any online deals

Although I probably won’t be holding off on buying something for Black Friday, I do think it is a day to have the credit card handy – just in case!
