Beauty Spend Vs Save – Part Three
A while ago as a gift, some friends of my boyfriend’s whom I don’t know terribly well gave me a Molton Brown shower gel. Now, it’s very nice and smells very pretty, but it got me to wondering… are the things you on your body really worth spending lots of money on? For the most part, you’re literally washing it down the drain, after all.
Eventually, I drew the conclusion that it’s just not necessary. With the exception of the odd Sally Hansen spray-on stocking, the skin on your body isn’t subject to the daily trials of the skin on your face. You don’t put makeup on your body, and if you work in an office, it doesn’t even see the UV exposure your face has to endure (except for a bit of decolletage and your hands).
So, without further ado, here’s my list of cheapies for you to slop about on your body to your heart’s content and not worry about wasting dosh:
Dove soap, about $2 a bar. I like this because it cleans, it foams, but it’s not too drying. For much the same effect and price you can also try: Sorbolene Bar Soap, Pears Transparent Bath Soap, Simple Soap and Eulactol Soap Free Cleansing Bar, most of which (quite ironically) don’t contain any “soap”. Why do you need a soap at all if you’re using shower gel, I hear you ask? Well ladies (and the odd gent), it’s called BO. And it’s bad. And shower gel won’t do the job alone.
Nivea foaming shower oil - about $5 – it’s like a super dooper hydrating shower gel meets body oil.
Body Shop Brazil Nut Body Scrub – about $25. This will leave a bit of a sheen on your skin when you’re finished – it has a slightly oily film about it, so I’m still a little undecided, but it’s great for winter skin that’s dry and dehydrated and summer skin when you’re looking to bust your pins out and have a pretty glow about them!
In the lotion / cream / moisturiser category I have a few favourites. If you’re into the gradual tanners, personally I favour Dove’s Summer Glow for around $10. If you haven’t tried these before, they’re really worth a go – just remember to apply them like you’re applying a fake tan – thin and even – not slapped on like a tub of sorbolene. I drink about 2L of pure water a day (plus herbal tea, etc.) but for whatever reason, my body skin is still almost always dry. *May* have something to do with my fondness for heaters.
Anyway – my favourite body stuff that I keep coming back to time and time again is Palmer’s - I really enjoy using almost every product in their range and at less than $10, I’ll keep using this for some time yet!
On that note… enjoy your body products. It’s a rare area that you can spend so little on and still get such great products.
